Rotorua is the steamy, stinky geothermal capital of New Zealand, and an enormous tourist attraction. My favorite part of the central North Island, however, was the Tongariro National Park, which is made up of two extinct and one active volcano, and is full of opportunities for hiking and Lord of the Rings site-spotting.
