A small town on the shores of the Rio Baker, Cochrane has a rich history centered around the perseverance of its original settlers, tough gauchos who crossed the Andes and traveled from the northern reaches of Chile in search of a new life. New traditions are growing too, such as Club Nautico Escualo, the local kayaking club. I was welcomed into the home of the Escualos' coach for a month, and found the town to be warm, welcoming, but also nervous about pending changes if the controversial HidroAysen dam project is approved.
