Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island, claims to be the first city in the world to see the sunrise. I visited with new friends on a farm in the hills above town and explored local swimming holes. North of Gisborne is Lake Waikaremoana, where I completed one of the NZ's "Great Walks": a four day circuit of the cobalt blue lake inside the lush Te Urewera forest.
