Carrying his kayak up the steep embankment to keep it safe in case the water rises overnight. One of the Baker's major tributaries, the Rio Colonia, is subject to a phenomenon known as glacial lake outburst floods, or GLOFs, in which glacial melt water builds up behind an ice dam, creating a lake of several million gallons. When the pressure grows too high, the ice dam bursts and the temporary lake drains with frightening speed. Roberto showed us driftwood stranded 20 feet up the bank from a GLOF in January. "The water flow tripled in less than 24 hours."
