Winter in the Colombian Andes means thousands of tons of wet, loose earth and rocks sliding and crashing down the steep, green hills, effectively isolating small communities and blocking major routes for days. El Parque Nacional Natural El Cocuy is a high-altitude and little-visited mountaineers' paradise, but May, we learned, is not the best time to see it.
