Three weeks of initial exploration left me with vivid impressions of a tiny fraction of the country: the kind but fierce Wayuu people of La Guajira; the thick, water-resistant woolen ponchos worn by the campesinos; martian-looking plants; gigantic lobsters and sharks; cloud-capped hills. I felt welcome, and safe, and completely convinced that I must go back.
